The Joint National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) Users' Meeting provides a venue for scientists from diverse disciplines who now use the NSLS and CFN facilities - and are planning to use NSLS-II - to share their work and discuss future directions for their research. New results and advances in experimental capabilities in synchrotron radiation and nanoscale science research will be highlighted.
This year, the theme of our meeting is “Telling our stories, sharing our science.” Our concept is to explore the ways that we, as scientists, communicate what we do to others in society. The program includes invited talks and workshops that will help teach us how to reach out in a more effective way to the non-scientists we meet and make them aware of what we do and why it’s important. The Meeting also will host a poster session and exhibits showcasing new technology and instrumentation. All offer opportunities to learn about the latest developments in synchrotron and nanoscience experimentation that can impact your own research.

On Monday and Wednesday, the scientific workshops on topics proposed and organized by members of the NSLS/NSLS-II and CFN user communities will be held.
The plenary session is all day on Tuesday and includes plenary speakers and management updates from the U.S. Department of Energy, BNL, NSLS/NSLS-II, and the CFN. Our plenary speakers include Carl Safina, along with either Elizabeth Bass or Howard Schneider, all from Stony Brook's Center for Communicating Science: http://www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org/.
We are also pleased to announce that we will have a presentation by Dr. Ainissa Ramirez, a materials scientist and science educator from Yale University; and a presentation from Paul Doucette of Battelle on effectively communicating with political figures on the impact of basic and applied scientific research.
The schedule on Tuesday ends with the annual meeting banquet, which provides an opportunity to carry on the discussion of scientific communication in a less formal setting (and have some fun!).
The Users' Executive Committees, the representative bodies of both Associations, cordially invite all to attend the plenary sessions on Tuesday, May 21, free of charge, and all are warmly invited to register for the workshops and other events.
Student Participation in the 2013 NSLS/CFN Users' Meeting
The Photon Sciences Users' Executive Committee (UEC) is pleased to announce a new program for student participation in the annual NSLS/CFN Users' Meeting.
If you are new to our Meeting and would like to be included on our mailing list, please send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Meeting is hosted and sponsored by the Photon Sciences Users’ Association, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials Users' Association, and external organizations representing the users of the NSLS facility and the CFN.
This joint meeting and associated workshops are supported by registration fees paid by the participants. Social events, lunches, and coffee breaks are provided to registered attendees primarily by our exhibitors and sponsors, and in part by the NSLS facility and CFN's Brookhaven Science Associates' funding. The Users' Meeting Planning Committee consists of users and staff of Photon Sciences, NSLS facility, and CFN. Administrative support for the meeting is provided by BNL's Photon Sciences Directorate and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials.
