Workshop 1: Organic Materials at Nanoscale: Physics and Applications (Part II)

Description:

Nanoscale functionalization of surfaces is key to designing novel catalysts, sensors, molecular magnets and other devices based on the interaction of an active surface with the surrounding medium. Exploring the atomic formation, the electronic structure, and the reactivity of organic films on well-defined model surfaces, such as single-crystal metals, is a necessary prerequisite toward a rational use of these systems in industrial applications. Synchrotron based spectroscopy and microscopy studies are particularly suited to this task, as they enable mapping of the molecular self-assembly processes together with the underlying energetics. The proposed Workshop will bring together world leading experts in organic film growth and self-assembly, as well as characterization methods, including spectroscopy, microscopy and scattering approaches catered towards the understanding of self-assembly, structure, electronic and magnetic properties of thin organic films. We anticipate that current user population of the NSLS and the CFN, and future users of the NSLS-II will benefit greatly from this Workshop. We envision the subject of the Workshop to be an important part of research program realized in the new electron spectro-microscopy (ESM) beamline at the NSLS-II.
